235 students – 3 days – 1 question: That was the Winter School 2023. The innovative course was held for the twelfth time at the Kufstein University. 235 students worked on solutions related to the topic of sustainable living.

From February 6 to 8, 2023, the Winter School (now: Sustain & Estate Winter School) took place for the twelfth time at the FH Kufstein Tirol. In addition to students from the degree programs Facility Management & Real Estate Management and Energy & Sustainability Management, 100 students from the Dutch partner universities Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and Inholland University of Applied Sciences were also present again this year. A total of 235 students worked in 29 project groups for three days on innovative solutions for the current topic of sustainable living.

The topic of the 2023 Winter School was: How much do we really need? “With this topic, we want to raise awareness of the space needed for housing, energy and food production, while also offering students the opportunity to develop innovative and creative ideas for the sustainable use of resources,” says Asc. Prof. (FH) Dipl.-Ing. (Univ.) Christian Huber, Director of Studies for the Bachelor's Degree in Energy & Sustainability Management, Facility & Real Estate Management and the Master's Degree in Energy & Sustainability Management, Facility & Real Estate Management, and is responsible for the Institute for Energy, Facility & Real Estate Management at the University of Applied Sciences Kufstein Tirol.

DEVELOPMENT OF A SUSTAINABLE RESIDENTIAL AREA FOR 100 PEOPLE

During the Winter School, students developed and assessed options for a sustainable residential area for 100 people. The aim was to demonstrate self-sufficiency in energy and food and to plan the living and community spaces according to the needs of different target groups. During the final poster exhibition, 29 innovative concepts and solution approaches for living and for meeting energy and food needs were presented.

Due to the interdisciplinary approach, the Winter School 2023 was not only an exciting and educational time for the students, but also for the twelve coaches who were able to accompany the students.

The Winter School is an international teaching event in which students work in groups to develop innovative solutions to current issues. The Winter School has already been recognized by UNESCO Austria as a Decade Project 2005-2014 and has received the Sustainability Award 2014 (1st place in the category of structural anchoring) and the Sustainability Award 2018 (3rd place in the category of international cooperation).
