WHAT IS RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning refers to acknowledging the skills you've already gained through your studies, career, or personal experiences. For you, this means:
- You'll save both time and money throughout your studies.
- A flexible approach to organizing your studies is possible.
Skills acquisition for students
FORMAL
- At school or university: Final certificates are typically available here.
- Examples: Lectures, seminars, exercises (with ECTS credits)
NON-FORMAL
- Planned further training: Typically, certificates are earned in these programs.
- Examples: Courses, workshops, in-house training
INFORMAL
- Everyday learning: There are no formal qualifications here.
- Examples: Work experience, hobbies, self-study

HOW DOES RPL WORK?
- Apply online by August 14th for the winter semester or January 15th for the summer semester. Please note: extended submission deadline for first-year students until October 31th.
- Submit supporting documents such as certificates, course descriptions, and other formal records.
- Provide a detailed description of practical experience (non-formal/informal learning).
The law provides for the following learning outcomes to be taken into account upon request:
- Recognition of examinations and other academic achievements from previous degree programs at recognized domestic and foreign higher education institutions
- Recognition of learning outcomes from vocational and general higher education institutions (e.g. HAK, HTL) up to a maximum of 60 ECTS credits*
- Validation of vocational or non-vocational qualifications (such as certificates of further education) up to a maximum of 60 ECTS credits*
*It should be noted that learning outcomes from vocational and general education schools, as well as vocational or non-vocational qualifications, may only be recognized up to a maximum of 90 ECTS credits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get credit here for a bachelor thesis that I wrote at another university?
Yes, this is possible if:
- The content is relevant: The work must be relevant to your degree program.
- Same scope: The ECTS points should be the same or only slightly different.
Tip: Submit an application for credit transfer and submit the Bachelor's thesis with all relevant documents.
Can I have my Master's thesis recognized by another university?
No, unfortunately that is not possible.
Do I have to resubmit documents I have already submitted?
Yes, whether from another degree program or another university, we always require complete and up-to-date documentation for the recognition of examination results. Documents that have already been submitted must therefore be resubmitted.
Tip: Make sure your documents are complete and copied.
What should proof of non-formal/informal skills look like?
A portfolio is required:
- Detailed work descriptions
- Work samples
- Project descriptions
- Illustrative material
- Documented practical examples
Important:
- Assign learning outcomes to the respective course
- Learning outcome-oriented documentation
Is a job reference sufficient as proof of non-formal/formal skills in the workplace?
No, a detailed portfolio with relevant evidence is required.
Is it possible to have partial competencies recognized?
No, the recognition is course-related.
This means that:
- All learning outcomes are required for the degree.
- Partial recognition is not possible.
Consequence:
- Rejection of the application if only partial proof of individual learning outcomes is provided.
- Completion of the entire course is required.
Is it possible to resubmit a rejected application?
Yes, in case of formal rejection (e.g. incomplete documents), if:
- Deadline met: January 15 or August 14
- Complete application with missing documents is submitted (complete documents)
The result of the subject-specific examination is available by the beginning of the semester at the latest.
Is it possible to receive credit for economics courses, for example, with the same number of ECTS credits?
Not per se:
- The learning outcomes/competences must match.
- The ECTS scope is not decisive.
Where are the learning outcomes and competencies to be found?
Please check the study regulations of the degree program:
- In the "Curriculum" section of the respective degree program on the UAS website in the study area

Is it possible to be exempted from attending the course and taking the exam as normal?
No, crediting means:
- Exemption from attending the course
- Simultaneous exemption from the examination
- Exemption from attendance alone is not possible.
How can an appeal be lodged against the rejection of an application for crediting?
Possibility of appeal:
- If the application is rejected by the head of degree program
- Appeal to the College in accordance with ASPO, Chapter 1.8
Important: Please note the deadlines and formal requirements in the ASPO.
Is an examination or participation required after a course has been credited?
No, a successful crediting means:
- No obligation to attend the course
- No obligation to take the examination
The course is considered successfully completed.
If the application for credit transfer is approved: Are the contents of the course relevant to the final Bachelor's or Master's examination?
Yes, crediting confirms that you have acquired the competencies of the course. You must be able to demonstrate these skills in the final examination.
Tip: The learning outcomes of the credited course can be found in the study regulations of the degree program.
If the application for credit transfer is approved: Does the course date still appear in the timetable?
Yes, the course date remains in the timetable.
- Background: Many students wish to participate as listeners.
- Technical implementation: Individual deletion not possible.
- Teachers can require active participation: this may be necessary for group organization.
