3D-Weld 2
Make metal 3D printing processes for automated welding usable in SMEs
Overview
-
Description:
The aim of the project is to develop a metal 3D printing solution for the user group of small and medium-sized companies that meets the specific requirements of steel, metal and mechanical engineering companies without increasing costs due to over-the-top solutions. This should enable small series to be produced economically in times of poor availability of skilled workers, for example.

Initial situation & project description
The medium-sized metal construction company Freisinger Metallbau has a good order situation with great sales potential, but is severely limited by a lack of skilled workers in the planning and execution of projects. Compared to competing solutions, in which either an industrial robot, a linear multi-axis system or parallel kinematics is used for automated welding and programming has to be carried out by a CAM specialist using a CAM system, the second method (Cobot - collaborative robot) is characterized by the fact that the path programming is carried out by teaching through manual “traversing” of the contour to be welded. The subsequent welding is carried out along the taught path, but in automated mode, without the need for expertise in the field of welding.
Project objectives
- Easy implementation: robot arm sits on 3-axis system
- No simultaneous movements of the linear main axes in automated mode
- Cost-effective because simple operation is combined with a large installation space
- Robot arm with the speed of an industrial robot and teaching mode
- CAM software also enables fully automated 3D printing
- Hybrid manufacturing
- 5-axis system
- Can be used independently by untrained personnel after a short training period
